Help Ezra Beat Cancer!

Reposted from MANIC MOTHER'S blog-

I don’t even know where to start this post…its going to be hard to write, as I am already choking back tears and haven’t finished the first sentence. I am taking some hours away from the hospital, to write this and to try to clear my head.

As many of you know my youngest son was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) 2 days ago, the day my world fell out from under me.

We took him to the Dr. the other day because he was bitten by either a spider or a tick. Shortly after we noticed the bites we saw he wasn’t feeling well, kind of lethargic, and not eating much, he also was limping in one leg. I assumed he was having a reaction from the bites.

They did an x-ray of his legs to make sure he hadn’t fractured anything as a precautionary measure. The x-ray showed he had some abnormalities in his bones.

We are in the grocery store and I get a call from his pediatrician, he tells me I need to take him to the ped. oncology tomorrow. That it could be cancer. My world is spinning now, we walk away from our filled grocery cart, and head back home. Panic starts to set in.

It still is not making any sense. Ezra has been a perfectly healthy baby. He shows none of the typical symptoms of ALL. Besides being pale (but we all are), and the limp that just showed up. He is healthy, or so I thought. How do you go from a limp to leukemia?

After seeing the pediatric oncologist we are still hopeful, since he also says he doesn’t see any of the symptoms. So they take some blood and we are on our way.

That night we get a call from him, and our told to take him to the ER. We rush our baby off in the middle of the night. At the ER my husband and I have to endure things no parent should ever have to see, I don’t think I can go into detail. Just imagine blood curdling screams from your baby, like nothing you have ever heard.

We are told later that night that it probably is leukemia. Still have to wait for final lab results though. Sure enough he has cancer. Holy shit, my baby has cancer.

He is doing good so far, he had surgery to place a port in his chest so they can administer the chemo, and that went well. He has had 2 rounds of chemo already, and is staying tough.

His spinal test came back negative, meaning the cancer had not yet spread to his spine and brain…we caught it really early.

Thank you spider.

The type of leukemia he has is the most treatable type, it has the highest remission and cure rate. Silver lining perhaps?

That doesn’t take away from the fact that he now faces 3 years of chemotherapy. 3 years.

Here is where we need your help.

We are by no means financially well off. I stay at home with the boys, and my husband works PT and goes to school FT. We live off of his little pay and student loans.

We also share a car.

We can’t afford a new one…or even a used one. I am going to be taking Ezra to the Dr. 2-3 times a week, there is no way we can share a car, with my husband having to go back and forward from school and work. Not to mention if he gets a fever I have to take him to the Dr. ASAP.

His insurance should cover all of his medical bills. Its just the other things we can’t afford.

We also need to make my home more suitable for Ezra, I need to have the plumbing, and ac serviced to make sure it is clean. Any bacteria infection can kill him. We just don’t have the funds to do so. Yes, my family is helping out some, but their means are limited as well. Not to mention much of their money will be spent flying down to help me (they live in MN).

I am a proud person, I do not like being a charity case. But given the current situation, I am swallowing my pride, and asking for any help you can give.

Even if its only a dollar, I would be thrilled.

If you don’t have a dollar (I know I don’t) , please help out by blogging about this, tweeting, stumbling, etc. I have seen how Mommy bloggers rally to help each other out in times of need, and I know you will all do the same for us.

I am putting a paypal button in this post for donations, and there will also be one up in my sidebar, which I know works. I don’t know if this one will work, its so confusing and my head hurts, but we need help ASAP so I am trying to muddle through this.

Please help in anyway you can, thanks so much, and keep the prayers and thoughts coming.

Freaky Friday-Skydiver Falls 6,000 Ft Survives

According to AOL news, a skydiver was filming another skydiver for a television documentary and was supposed to be signaled by the other diver when it was time to pull the chute. There was a mix-up somehow and he ended up pulling the chute with only seconds to spare.

The Sky diver, James Poole, ended up crashing into the side of a snowy, rocky, mountainside in Russia. After he landed he was alive but, critically injured. He thought for a moment that he might want to leave a few last words with someone but, amazingly he survived. Boole suffered injuries to his spine, ribs, teeth, and lungs.

Boole was treated at a Moscow hospital and then transported back home to Britain.

Rockin' Baby Sling Review And Giveaway

If you've noticed on my blog recently, I have really been curious about baby slings and pouches. I have wanted to know more about them, the material they are made with, the comfortability, the color and pattern choices, etc. Rockin' Baby Slings is in a league of their own when it comes to color and pattern choice. They also have a great selection of ring slings and pouches.

I received their baby pouch in "raspberry beret", if the name doesn't evoke memories of driving around in your car and listening to Prince, I don't know what does. This is an example of how this brand is making their way in the sling world. The pouch is gorgeous! The rich jewel tones are bold and fun! Fabulous, bold patterns with whimsical naming thrown in. I guess you could say, I'm smitten.

The pouch and the sling are different in that there are differences in adjustment. The pouch I received is one solid piece that goes around the body. There are four different sizes that can be made out of it with hidden zippers that I found to be unique to the Rockin' pouches. You can fold the material and zip it up and it can shorten the pouch. The material can then be covered up so that you can't see the zippers. Most pouches don't have any adjustment ability to them. The material is wide enough to rest across your shoulders and back very comfortably! I loved that aspect of their pouch!

The sling is a ring sling and is fully adjustable. The materials come in a variety of colors, are generally reversible, and come in organic for those conscientious mama's out there. The slings and pouches are high quality materials and well made. They are made locally in Los Angeles, CA and not made abroad. The materials are even sourced locally. Way to give back to the community! They also offer a page to show you how to put on the sling or the pouch and how to adjust it.

My daughter was about 2.5 mos here. Early March 2007. She was really mad about something and I had to get it on camera he he.

Making Tuesday Tasty-Turkey Burger

I love Red Robins turkey burgers. They are flavorful and simple. I haven't been able to pull up a recipe for how they get their meat to taste like it does but, do know that it is peppery(yum!) I found this recipe and thought it looked super yummy. I love juicy, flavorful turkey burgers.

Ingredients

1 1/2 pounds ground turkey
1/4 cup dry bread crumbs
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
2 scallions including green tops, chopped
Salt
1/4 teaspoon fresh-ground black pepper
2 tablespoons milk
1 egg, beaten to mix
2 tablespoons cooking oil
1/4 pound provolone cheese, sliced
1/2 cup mayonnaise
3 tablespoons pesto, store-bought or homemade
1 10-inch round or 8-by-10-inch rectangle of focaccia
1/2 pound tomatoes, sliced

Directions

1.In a medium bowl, combine the ground turkey, bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, parsley, scallions, 3/4 teaspoon salt, the pepper, milk, and egg. Form the mixture into four patties, each about 1-inch thick.

2.In a large nonstick frying pan, heat the oil over moderate heat. Add the turkey burgers and cook for 5 minutes. Turn and then top each burger with the provolone cheese. Cook until just done, about 6 minutes longer.

3.Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise and the pesto. Cut the focaccia into quarters. Cut each piece in half horizontally. Spread the cut surfaces of each piece with the pesto mayonnaise.

4.Top the bottoms of the focaccia with the turkey burgers and then the tomato slices. Sprinkle the tomato with a pinch of salt. Cover with the top piece of focaccia.

Notes
Menu SuggestionBurgers go best with other finger food—oven-roasted potato wedges and raw carrot or fennel sticks, for example.

Wordless Wednesday-First Bath Jan 2007

My baby was born 4 lbs 12 oz and she lost a few oz in the hospital. She was a little thing and once her umbilical cord fell off, I gave her first bath to her in this bowl. It was sort of a homage to my parents doing it with me since I was almost the exact same size. Anyway, she looks concerned but, she was actually enjoying the warm water and relaxing in it like a hot tub ha ha.

Making Tuesday Tasty-Parmesan-Crusted Pork Chop

Ingredients

2 large eggs
1 cup dried Italian-style bread crumbs
3/4 cups freshly grated Parmesan
4 (1/2 to 3/4-inch thick) center-cut pork loin chops (each about 10 to 12 ounces)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
6 tablespoons olive oil
Lemon wedges, for serving

Directions

Whisk the eggs in a pie plate to blend. Place the bread crumbs in another pie plate. Place the cheese in a third pie plate. Sprinkle the pork chops generously with salt and pepper. Coat the chops completely with the cheese, patting to adhere. Dip the chops into the eggs, then coat completely with the bread crumbs, patting to adhere.

Heat 3 tablespoons of oil in a very large skillet over medium heat. Add pork chops, in batches if necessary, and cook until golden brown and the center reaches 150 degrees, about 6 minutes per side. Transfer the chops to plates and serve with lemon wedges.

This looks so good, I think I'm gonna have to make it this week. At this point, I have nothing to add or take away except you could use Panko breadcrumbs if you like a little crispness added to your meat. I really like the simplicity of the recipe. If you like pork chops, a little fried pork chop every once in awhile is a treat!

The Sickies Are No Fun

I guess I can't complain, I mean my daughter was never sick for the first year of her life. I think she got sniffles once. She was breastfed, wasn't around a lot of other kids often, and has always been in good health.

Right after she was weaned, probably a month or so, she got a stomach bug. She was very ill for a few days. Since then she's gotten another stomach virus, basic cold and coughs, and fever. Last week was weird. She had a fever for almost two days that wasn't too high but, enough to make her miserable. She had a touch of something with her tummy a few days later and then on Saturday she started with a cough in the evening. That turned into croup. She was crabby and coughing on Sunday and then last night was even worse. This is her first real croup. You can tell she doesn't like being sick and is definitely not used to it ha ha.

Kaia is clingy and whiny. I felt really bad for her last night though, because she was coughing even more than the night before. It was hard for her to sleep. Our humidifier died on us after two years, so I went and got a warm vaporizer. That seemed to do the trick after a few hours because her coughing slowed down and she was able to rest. She even slept in a little.

It's never fun to have a sick little one. You feel helpless in making them feel comfortable. Hopefully she will be done after today since there hasn't been fever involved in this croup.

Rosy Baby/Sling Carrier Review

When I contacted Rose, I was very curious to see how the slings she carried were made, and enjoyed the fabrics that were chosen for the line of slings she has in her shop. It was a pleasure working with her, she is very amicable and helpful. I explained my body shape to her and she sent me a sling suggestion that has worked out very well for me!

I am new to this sling business. I desperately wanted one for my daughter who is now two, when she was born. I had one but, it was a cheap, mass produced one that later had some recalls. I wasn't able to hold her close to my body, nurse her, or do things hands free really because the ring would slip and it hung too low on my body.

When I received the Baby Sling-Hybrid I was pleasantly surprised by how well the sling was made and put together. This is a ring sling, the benefits of which are being able to adjust it quite a bit. It is made with a sateen material which does in fact, feel like soft "bedsheets". It is a hybrid of a pouch and sling in one, and comes with a closed sling tail. Traditional open tail slings are a lot more adjustable but, I really had no problem cinching it up or letting it out. I have a large bosom so comfort is a big deal for me, there is plenty of material and stretchiness in the fabric to make this an incredibly comfortable sling.

The rails of the sling are lightly padded to go up against baby's leg. The shoulder area of the sling is also lightly padded to help with pressure distribution. I really liked that feature as I was holding my 25 pound daughter in a hip carrying position. She felt secure, the weight felt distributed well, and she really enjoyed being carried around by mama.

The site also includes a very informative "how to" page which is especially helpful for newbies like myself. There are so many ways to carry your baby and toddler. There is a sling comparison page that shows you what different carriers are used for to help you pick out the one most suitable for yourself. This site was a complete package for me regarding a baby sling. Oh, and did I mention super affordable?

Freaky Friday-Snake Phobia Justified

A man in Taiwan sat down to use the toilet and was greeted by a snake bite to his genitals. He felt the bite and immediately stood up to see what had happened. Apparently, a black and yellow snake was coiled up in his toilet.

The man was treated for minor injuries and is being watched for infection. The local news apparently showed the snake coiled in the toilet.

Um, I would have the heebs forever after dealing with something like this and I don't even have Ophidiophobia or fear of snakes like some people do. I would never be able to pee in the dark in the middle of the night again, etc.

Excuse me while I shake the willies off!

Happy Friday everyone!

Kidshoos Review & Giveaway *CLOSED*

I've come across a wonderful source for kid's shoes of all different styles and want to tell you about it. It's a new site and they are committed to offering quality, low priced footwear called Kidshoos. Kidshoos are also committed to providing a safe work environment, fair wages, and being environmentally conscious. There's an assortment of athletic, urban, dress, sandals, etc. My daughter got to try these funky, fun, new styles called Edgie Veggies. They are super soft, and made 100% animal free.

They carry brands like Birki's kids, Graffeeti, and Rocket Dog. There's plenty to choose from for boys and girls. Their prices are reasonable and mine came quickly! Kaia was sent the Edgie Veggie in Simba Pink. This shoe has "playful" written all over it. The first thing I thought of when I saw them was that they were very playful and kid friendly.

The sole of the shoes are white. They are scuff, slip, and water resistant. The toe is covered with the rubber to prevent tearing and scuffing. The material on the shoe has a slight pattern to it and it is really stretchy. There are no laces, which is wonderful to me. This makes these shoes easy to slip on and off my two year old.

I had a lovely experience with them customer service wise and would definitely recommend you checking them out. You may find something you just have to have.

Buy It

You can buy the Edgie Veggies and more directly from their site, kidshoos.com. They are offering free shipping on all orders through the end of June!

Win It

Kidshoos has been gracious enough to offer one winner their choice of Edgie Veggie brand shoes.

Wordless Wednesday-Hubby and I in Sedona 2005

I was going to put this picture of us up last week but, changed my mind for Mother's Day. This was the year we were married. We went to Sedona, AZ in the spring to enjoy the day. This pic makes me laugh because we both look like we're up to something.

Making Tuesday Tasty-Fried Rice

Rice is easy, inexpensive, and fairly quick to make. Even easier if you have prepared it in advance to make a dish like fried rice. I grew up eating it kind of a poor man's way. My mom would make the calrose or pearl rice because she loved sticky rice. She would cook some bacon in the pan and pour off most of the grease, leaving a little to fry in. She would then add the steamed rice, green onion, egg, and soy sauce to complete. We LOVED this and I still love it this way. Below is a recipe I found off Food Network. It has more ingredients but, the beauty of fried rice, as with many dishes, is you can make it your own. You can add tons of different veggies in it, proteins, and even sauces.

Ingredients

1 1/2 tablespoons peanut oil, divided
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1/2 cup chopped onion
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger
2 cooked pork chops, diced (about 2 cups)
1 cup rice, regular or instant, cooked according to package directions
1/4 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce
2 teaspoons sesame oil
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup freshly chopped cilantro leaves

Directions

Heat 1/2 tablespoon of the peanut oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add eggs and tilt pan to coat the surface. Cook eggs in an even layer until cooked through, flipping halfway through cooking (about 2 minutes per side). Remove eggs, dice into small pieces and set aside.

To the same pan, heat remaining peanut oil. Add onion, garlic and ginger and cook 2 minutes. Add diced pork and cook 3 minutes, until golden brown. Add rice, soy sauce and sesame oil and cook 2 minutes to heat through. Season, to taste, with salt and black pepper. Remove from heat and stir in cilantro.

Transfer to a serving plate and top with chopped eggs.

Good Weekend

I had a perfectly lovely weekend. My husband and I hung out Friday night and watched a movie and just spent time reconnecting. Saturday, he worked early and my daughter and I stayed home and just lazed around the house. We took a nap for a bit and then Hubby, Kai, and I went shopping for his Birthday present and my Mother's Day/Birthday present. I didn't find the thing I wanted just yet but, he got a nice watch. The last watch he got was a wedding present from me in 2005.

I went to church in the morning while hubby went to work. My daughter and I enjoyed the morning listening to the sermon and then eating a wonderful meal prepared by the men of our church. After a yummy lunch and visiting with some friends, I went to visit a mommy friend who has fallen on some tough times lately. It was her first Mother's day this year. I enjoyed talking with and seeing her darling little girl.

Overall, it was a relaxing weekend and I got to spend it with my own little girl. What Mother's day is all about. I am a blessed woman and thankful for my little girl!

Freaky Friday-barreleye fish

My Sister and I used to watch many of the undersea explorer shows growing up. Being completely amazed by the many different creatures that live in our oceans as well as being slightly creeped out! The deep water fish are a different animal and have vastly different in instinct, look, and ability.

The Macropinna is a deep sea fish that has a transparent head and tubular eyes. They can see at 360 degrees. Their bodies are that of a regular fish, dark and large fins to help them wade in the water. The common name for this fish is "barrel eyes" and they primarily sit motionless in the water, wading. They have large digestive tracts and some net-caught have had jellyfish fragments in their stomachs.

I say this one goes in the books as FREAKY. Life is often stranger than fiction.

What NOT To Get Her For Mother's Day!

I saw a list of things not to get Mom on Mother's Day and thought it was pretty funny! I decided to make my own list and would love to get some other Mom opinions. I've only had two Mother's Days previously so I'm no expert. My first Mother's Day was a total dud and my sweet husband had a lot of explaining to do. I was heart broken. I did however, much later, get one of the sweetest cards I've ever received. Last year? Ha ha. I won't go there.

1. Nothing. If your wife gave birth to your child, it would be nice to at least acknowledge that and recognize all she's done for your offspring and, you for that matter. If it's your mom, come on! You know she deserves at least a little something for all she does for you.

2. Workout equipment-I don't care if she has been complaining about her weight or shape, if she has even pointed out something she would like to have in the near future, or a workout tape that she thinks looks fun. It's not appropriate and will not go.over.well!

3. Lingerie-I may be the only one but, for Mother's Day I don't think it's an appropriate gift. It's about her...not you getting lucky! :) And I think it goes without saying that you would never buy this for your own Mom. ICK!

4. A Snuggie or a Slanket-ha ha I totally stole this one because I was laughing at the thought of getting this for Mother's Day.

5. Last minute gift-By this I mean, getting something the day of or even better, telling her you didn't get something yet and running to the store to go buy it. You had 365 days to figure something out for Mother's Day, Birthday, etc.

6. Kitchen or Domestic items-Yes, she's a mom. Yes, she may really want a Cuisinart and has been begging for it. Mother's Day is the one day a year where Mom can not only feel like mom but, an individual. It's nice to take a break from domestics, especially those of us who are immersed in it all day long. Think of it this way, would you want your wife to buy you new gloves for your welding job as a Birthday or Father's day gift? I didn't think so.

7. Candy-unless you're gonna throw in her favorite candy with a gift that you've bought or made her, just leave the candy out of it. Especially if you buy some generic whatever-they-have-left candy that she'll never touch.

Remember everyone, the thought counts way more than how much you spent. Moms are sentimental creatures. They want to remember their children a certain way, remember how much their husband loved and appreciated them for all they do, and they want to honor their Mom the same way.

Marriage Advice On Momlogic

I found this link on twitter. It's entitled Inoculate Your Marriage Against An Affair. I thought it was very informative and to the point. I think it's essential to remember our marital intimacy. As my friend Deb says "it's the cement" that keeps our marriages fulfilled.

I love the New Poppy Market Tote.. too cute..
For my mother for Mothers Day a few years ago, I took her on vacation. Before leaving my sisters, brothers and I and in laws shopped like crazy and had everything ready. As soon as mom and I left town they began the real work and completely redid her Daycare room( she had just started running a home daycare). Everything from Drywall, to paint, carpets, furniture, shelving, toys.. It was all finished when we arrived home on Mother's Day!! She was so surprised and it is still her favorite gift of all. Also my family taped it while they were doing it and we gave her the video.. Too much fun!

This was a very sweet Mother's Day story! Congrats Aunt Rene on your win. Thanks to all who entered. You have 48 hours to claim your prize.

Wordless Wednesday-Mothers Day Tribute

I had a totally different post but, wanted to do something different since it's Mother's Day Sunday. My dear friend, Jenny took these newborn pictures of my daughter and they are one of the greatest gifts I've ever received. They all turned out gorgeous! My gift from God and I when she was a little thing. People that know us in real life know just how little my girl was for a long time. She still is very petite.

Making Tuesday Tasty-Baked Shells w Pesto

I know it's Cinco De Mayo but, I posted chicken chilaquiles last week in preparation of it. This week I'm going to post an old stand by that my roomies and I used to make when we would have hoardes of people over. It was fun for us girls to host a little get together. I got this out of a Food and Wine cookbook and it's yummy, simple and cost effective.

Ingredients
1 tablespoon cooking oil
1 onion, chopped
1 pound ground beef
2 cups canned chopped tomatoes, drained (from one 28-ounce can)
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 cup store-bought or homemade pesto
3/4 pound medium pasta shells
6 ounces mozzarella, grated (about 1 1/2 cups)
1/4 cup grated Parmesan

Directions

1.Heat the oven to 400°. Oil a large baking dish (about 9 by 13 inches).

2.In a large stainless-steel frying pan, heat the oil over moderately low heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until starting to soften, about 3 minutes. Stir in the ground beef and cook, breaking it up, until the meat is no longer pink, about 2 minutes. Drain off any excess fat.

3.Add the tomatoes and salt to the pan and bring to a simmer. Cook until most of the liquid evaporates, about 10 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the pesto.

4.Meanwhile, in a large pot of boiling, salted water, cook the shells until just done, about 10 minutes. Drain and toss with the sauce. Put half of the pasta into the prepared baking dish and top with half the mozzarella and 2 tablespoons of the Parmesan. Repeat with the remaining pasta, mozzarella, and Parmesan. Bake until bubbling, about 15 minutes.

Almost any relatively soft, mild cheese will taste good here. You might try fontina in place of the mozzarella, or even Gouda or Havarti. You can try whatever small pasta you like and your favorite pesto.

Not Me! Monday

I haven't done this meme before but, I thought it might be fun. MckMama is back doing it again after a seven week hiatus. Her son, Stellan is home now and she is getting back into a routine.

Ok, I will have to think...

Last week I definitely did not allow my daughter to eat basically what she wanted without putting up much of a fight over veggies, fruits, etc.

I absolutely did not have fast food for both of my meals today, who would do that?

I would not leave a load of laundry in the wash and forget about it until I could smell it! Not me, definitely not me.

Mod Mum Review and Giveaway *CLOSED*

Modmum carries a line of beautiful baby slings and I was so excited when they agreed to do a giveaway with me! I was struck by the fun, modern look of the slings as well as their prices. They offer a few designs that are reversible and neutral, which was a big thing for me. When you are having a baby and not finding out the sex, or just trying to plan ahead, you want some modern, neutral choices to choose from. I found that Modmum had a great assortment of colors and pattern choices.

Their sizing is actually very accurate. I was a little worried that it may not be but, when I tried on the sling and put the baby in, it was no problem. Their slings are a pouch style so they are not adjustable. It's very important that you go by their sizing guide or you'll end up with something too small or too big and it won't be as comfortable and could even be dangerous.

I chose Emily and was very pleased with the colors and material. It's very sturdy feeling but, it's light. I've never used a sling or pouch before so I needed a good guide. Modmum has an excellent how to page! They link to videos that show you exactly how to put it on, put the baby in, and take the baby out. They also show pictures of different holds that you can do with their slings. I was a little intimidated and wondered if I could get the baby in and keep it in without harm.

I want to welcome all the blog party people to this giveaway! Go check out all the other great giveaways going on at the blog party. Run. The party ends May 10, 2009.
