Freaky Friday-Vitamin D deficiency

OK, I know this subject doesn't sound that freaky. But, really, it is. Recently I skimmed through an article touching on Vitamin D deficiency in young children. The cause and affects of that, and how to remedy it.

Many people don't realize that vitamin D deficiency is a major problem and can have many adverse affects. Vitamin D isn't actually a vitamin, it's a precursor hormone. This nutrient in our bodies help build strong bones and teeth but, does much more. It supports other minerals and nutrients to help with normal processes in the body to keep you healthy.

Major vitamin D functions

Supports key mineral absorption and metabolism (especially calcium and phosphorus in the blood and bones).

Regulates normal cell differentiation and proliferation (e.g., prevention of cancer).

Promotes insulin sensitivity and blood sugar regulation (insulin secretion).

Regulates over 200 genes through binding to vitamin D receptors throughout the body

Our primary source of Vitamin D is sunlight. As much as 70% of the American children aren't getting enough vitamin D. That's astounding to me! This has affected their blood pressure levels, their good cholesterol, and their insulin sensitivity.

What I didn't know is that you should be out yourself and letting your children play in the sunshine for 10 to 15 minutes without sunblock and then covering them up. For darker skinned children it takes longer due to the melanin in their skin.

Ultimately what makes this freaky is that Vitamin D deficiency can cause our children to develop major diseases in their 20's and 30's. Including rickets, high cholesterol, soft bones, certain cancers, obesity, high insulin, etc.

Hm... Too bad we live in AZ where it's too hot to be out for that long! OK, I know it's not too hot, but the kids complain after 5 minutes, let alone 15... Unless we're at church... =)

Luckily in AZ we don't have to worry too much... get lots of sun here. I try to make it a habit to give my kids 10-15minutes outside. If we are out there longer, that's when the sun block makes an appearance!
